Carpenter's Way is located on a beautiful, wooded
40-acre
tract
of land in Fortson, Georgia, about 15
miles North of the city
of Columbus. The property was generously donated by
Mr. and
Mrs. William B. Turner
to further the vision of our founders Glenn Davis and Teresa Davis.
Carpenter's Way provides residential living for boys ages
6-18 in our three family-style, brick homes. The David Mincey Averett Home, our first home, was completed early
in 1992 with our first boy arriving in April. Our second home, the Davis Home, opened in 1997 and increased our capacity to 16 boys. In 1998, a historic home was donated and remodeled into the Vardaman Community Home which is used for various functions. The Smith-Coleman Home was added in 2004, raising the current capacity to 24.
Each home has room for eight children, with a full-time house parent couple residing in an apartment within the home. The boys typically share a bedroom with one
other resident, and are often allowed to bring personal
items to use in their area of the room. Everyone shares household duties, or chores, which teaches the boys work ethics, responsibility, and a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
Also on the property is a a large swimming pool, an
athletics/ recreation field, and our administration building which houses a recreation room and a wood shop. Our spacious layout leaves plenty of room for hiking, riding bikes and skateboards, and other activities.
